Last Thursday, many people around China went to supermarkets to buy salt. The employee of a computer company had spread the rumor saying the recent nuclear catastrophe in Japan has polluted the sea off China’s Eastern cost. The post spread rapidly in new media and encouraged millions of people to panic buy and store salt. This shows how influential online and social media channels have become in the past years. Meanwhile, the specialties and trends of new media in China were the topic at the 7th Sino-German Communication Forum in Beijing, initiated by Storymaker and the German Centre Beijing.
